Our Partnership with Pleasant Street Primary School

We believe our role in Liverpool goes far beyond shopping. We’re part of the city’s fabric – and that means giving back, supporting our community, and taking real steps towards a greener future.

One of our proudest recent moments has been teaming up with the brilliant pupils and staff at Pleasant Street Primary School – a local inner-city school that we brought sustainability to life in a fun, hands-on way.

Resident beekeeper, Tony, ran buzzing workshops with three year groups, teaching the children all about the incredible role bees play in our environment. But we didn’t stop there – we wanted every child to get stuck in. So, with planters built from reused wood by our own maintenance team, all 180 pupils planted and grew their own fruit and veg. It was messy, fun and meaningful – helping boost biodiversity and showing kids how small changes can lead to healthier, more sustainable choices.

We also took the learning further with a visit to a local bee-themed museum exhibition and a lovely social media campaign for International Day of Hope, where the children shared their dreams for both their plants and their futures. Their messages were full of heart – and gave us all a real sense of optimism.

This whole project forms the core of our latest Green Apple Award entry, and it’s a perfect example of what ESG means to us: action, not words. It’s about making a difference here and now – and planting seeds for the future.

We’re excited to keep working with Pleasant Street and hope to grow the project with even more schools in the months ahead.
