As part of our growing efforts to become a more environmentally conscious organisation, and to promote positive mental wellbeing among our employees, we’ve installed two beehives on the rooftop of our site!
It might come as a surprise, but bees are incredibly important to our ecosystem, and they play a critical role in preserving ecological balance. Without bees pollinating plants, crops and flowers, we wouldn’t be able to produce much of the food that sustains us and our city wouldn’t be as green as it is.
The hope is that by keeping bees on our rooftop, we can do our part in contributing to the environmental generation of the local area. Between the two hives, there’ll be 40,000 bees – and this number will keep growing as the hives attract new bees!
But this isn’t the time we’ve developed an initiative to become a more environmentally friendly centre. Last June, we installed a “living green wall” on the exterior of the centre, an installation with over 14,000 evergreen plants to encourage bees to pollinate. At 65 metres, it’s one of the longest of its kind in the UK and it also contributes to making our city a greener place.
This new initiative won’t just have an environmental impact, though. Beekeeping has been shown to reduce stress, anxiety and depression, so we hope that we can have a positive effect on the mental wellbeing of our incredible team, as well as benefiting the local environment.
