Marjie Kontzle and her husband Russell, who celebrate 46 years together this month, are the winners of our St Johns Valentine’s Day competition. We’ve been searching for the best love stories with a St Johns connection and the couple from Walton have been chosen as your number one after getting the most votes on our Facebook page. Marjie shared their story of romantic nights out at The Moonstone, and a hen party at the Top Rank Suite where she fell down the escalator, leaving her with an unexpected wedding day souvenir.

Despite the bruised knees, Marjie and Russell married in Walton almost 44 years ago and have two children – Vicky, 41, and Jay who’s just turned 40 – three grandchildren and another on the way. They were delighted to win our competition and be whisked off for a special Valentine’s night date – a three course dinner for two with wine and tickets for a show at the Playhouse Theatre.

“I was very surprised to find out we’d won, it was lovely,” said 61-year-old Marjie.  “We don’t usually make a big fuss on Valentine’s Day, but we do still go out on date nights together quite often.

“Russell is a romantic in his own way, and I get flowers off him every week, he’s just not very materialistic about it. He did joke about me being his little Valentine as he dropped me off for work though!”

Centre Manager Neil Ashcroft, also shared his congratulations for the winning love birds.

“It’s been fantastic to reminisce over bygone times at St Johns with our lovely Liverpool couples. We’ve had a remarkable response to the competition, revealing stories which have brought back some fantastic memories of the centre.”

“What better way to celebrate the love for our community than to commemorate the memories of the people who have walked our malls. Congratulations to both Marjie and Russell on winning with the penultimate St Johns love story, we wish them all the best and a wonderful date night!”
