St Johns Liverpool: Proud to be supporting the LGBT+ community

10/06/23

Pride month is an important time for organisations and individuals to reflect on their commitments to diversity and inclusivity in the workplace: to look at how far we’ve come, remember how far we have yet to go until we achieve true equality, and consider the part each of us has to play in effecting meaningful change.

St Johns has been serving Liverpool for over 50 years and is proud to be at the heart of a bustling and progressive city. As a team, we have fostered a culture not just of acceptance or tolerance, but of celebration. We embrace the diversity and individuality of our team and our customers, and always strive to ensure everyone who steps through our doors feels at home.

However, we also know that Pride month presents a great opportunity for businesses to highlight the support available to those who may be struggling and to signpost the brilliant organisations who work tirelessly to combat stigma, prejudice and inequality.

With this in mind, we’ve put together a list of organisations across the region whose work, not just during Pride month but throughout the whole year, is a vital and necessary resource for many LGBT+ people in the city of Liverpool and beyond.

The Michael Causer Foundation is a charity that supports young LGBT+ people across the city

Sahir House supports, empowers and provides information for those living with HIV

LCR Pride Foundation is an organisation promoting Liverpool as an LGBT+ friendly city

Trans Health Merseyside provides health information and support to transgender and gender non-conforming people

GYRO is a collection of youth groups for LGBT+ people to socialise and receive support

Lancashire LGBT supports LGBT+ people in Lancashire to lead happier, healthier lives

In-Trust Merseyside works with, and advocates for the acceptance of, the trans community

St Johns celebrates Liverpool’s Eurovision win

10/10/22

It’s official… Liverpool is the host city for the 67th Eurovision Song Contest!

After weeks of anticipation, during which time seven shortlisted cities were whittled down to just two, Liverpool has been victorious in its bid to host the world’s longest running televised music competition in 2023.

This will be the first time in 25 years that the UK has hosted Eurovision, and it’s a great honour and a privilege to have it here in our wonderful city – one with a truly global outlook and reach.

As a UNESCO City of Music and with twin city status with Odessa in Ukraine, our great city was always a real contender for taking over hosting duties from Ukraine.

Now, with planning commencing for the event next May, Liverpool is getting ready to host a magical global music event, while also putting Ukrainian people and culture at the very forefront of the contest.

The council has plans to work with Ukrainian street artists and designers to create a public education programme to coincide with the event, and it’s brilliant to know that the city is doing everything it can to represent Ukraine and its culture throughout the contest.

The whole team at St Johns is so proud of the city, and all the people involved in this successful bid. It’s time to show Europe and the rest of the world how this city can throw a party like no other.

Statement on the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

08/09/22

St Johns Shopping Centre is saddened to learn of the passing of Her Majesty the Queen.

As the longest reigning monarch in British history, the Queen has long occupied a special place in the hearts of millions of Britons and those living in Commonwealth nations around the world.

At this time, our team reflects not just on Her Majesty’s remarkable achievements and steadfast commitment to public duty, but on her special connection to St Johns, having opened the centre to the public in 1971.

Her Majesty also had a special connection to the city of Liverpool, having attended a service of thanksgiving at the opening of Liverpool Cathedral in 1978; the opening of Liverpool John Lennon Airport in 2000; and the opening of the new Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in 2016.

Her leadership, humour, kindness and impact in the city of Liverpool, across the rest of the UK and around the world will be remembered for generations to come.

The St Johns community will, like many millions across the world, be observing a period of mourning and we would ask our shoppers and those within our community to join us in showing respect at this time.

St Johns Shopping Centre looking to the future following the reopening of Lime Street

17/08/22

Liverpool’s largest indoor retail destination, St Johns Shopping Centre, is looking forward to seeing improvements in footfall and car park occupancy following the recent completion of the Lime Street Connectivity Scheme.

For the duration of the 36-month scheme, the centre’s footfall and car park occupancy dramatically reduced due to the ongoing roadworks restricting access to St Johns car park.

As the gateway to the city’s cultural attractions, including theatres, museums and entertainment venues, the car park’s inaccessibility has had a negative knock-on effect on many businesses within St Johns’ vicinity.

Now, with the works completed and the new-look Lime Street open, St Johns is keen to see its footfall and occupancy rates recover to bring an increase in trade to its tenants, many of which are local independent retailers.

Neil Ashcroft, Centre Director at St Johns Shopping Centre, commented: “We’ve had to deal with a series of challenges for the duration of the Connectivity Scheme, as have many other businesses in the area, and we’re pleased to see the scheme now in action.

“As a community shopping centre, we’re an important base for our shoppers, many of whom access our stores, facilities and services on a daily basis.

“Our car park is also a vital asset, feeding footfall to many other businesses in the area, and its inaccessibility has dealt a blow to those businesses that rely on us.

“Now, we’re looking ahead to a hopeful future for the area. We are open, we are accessible, and we hope that the redesign of the road will facilitate a return to normality for our community.”

St Johns Shopping Centre Joins Forces With Everton’s Official Charity

26/07/22

Everton in the Community is delighted to welcome St Johns Shopping Centre as a Charity of the Year Partner.

St Johns Shopping Centre has become synonymous with Liverpool’s retail sector since it first opened in 1969, and its latest link up with Everton’s official charity will see both organisations work towards a mutual goal.

St Johns and EitC are partnering to support those most in need across the city, whilst also aligning their corporate values and working together to highlight the charity’s life-saving provision.

The partnership will bring a particular focus to attaining more participant engagement within the charity’s programmes, following the 18-month postponement of face-to-face delivery during the pandemic in 2020 and 2021.

Regularly attracting more than 13 million people a year, St Johns Shopping Centre will provide the charity with a significant platform to expand its reach and offer its life-changing delivery to more residents across Merseyside.

The partnership will aim to engage, educate and support thousands across the city and help to improve lives across the region.

St Johns Shopping Centre Director, Neil Ashcroft, said: “We are delighted to have Everton in the Community as our charity partner.

“There is a clear synergy between St Johns and EitC as we both serve the same community. We look forward to giving our support in an impactful and meaningful way by pledging time and resources to help on important projects and assist in fundraising activities.

“Working together will make a tangible impact to those that visit the centre and access EitC’s services.”

Dan Rogers, Corporate Partnership Executive at Everton in the Community, added: “We have a great opportunity to engage with the visitors of St Johns Shopping Centre who may not be aware of all the work our charity does and the support available within our community.

“We would like to thank St Johns for this opportunity to engage more of our local community in EitC programmes.

“Everton in the Community continues to break down barriers and stigmas surrounding poor physical and mental health, and strives to improve the lives of all people.”

Charity Bungee Jump

25/05/22

Last month, the team at St Johns took part in a charity bungee jump from the Verzasca Dam in Switzerland, to raise money for the Samaritans of Liverpool and Merseyside.

The dam, which sits at a height of 220m above the Verzasca River, famously appeared in a stunt sequence in the 1995 James Bond film GoldenEye, voted the best movie stunt of all time.

Braving the epic jump was Centre Director, Neil Ashcroft, alongside fellow St Johns team members Anthony Bailey, Ahmed Karim and John Costello. Their efforts raised over £6,000 for the charity through corporate donations. All of the funds raised went directly to The Samaritans of Liverpool and Merseyside.

Neil said “Our people are important to us. They make the centre the vibrant place that it is, and we’re always thinking of new and creative ways to raise money and make a difference to people’s lives. Our centre has been an imperative part of the community for over 50 years, and we’re delighted to be able to support the Samaritans through this initiative, playing our part in giving back to the community.”

Rachel Howley, Development Manager at the Samaritans of Liverpool and Merseyside, added: “It’s great to see a local community shopping centre raising money and investing it where it’s most needed.

“These donations will directly impact local people who urgently require our help, and we are incredibly thankful to Neil and the St Johns team for their continued support.”

Here for you, here for the environment

10/11/21

At St Johns Liverpool, we want to do right by our people and our planet.

Our community of shoppers are important to us and we’re always trying to go above and beyond to make their experience of the centre the best that it can be.

But we also want to show the environment the same level of care and consideration.

Over the last few years, we’ve been working hard to develop exciting initiatives that do good and deliver real results for both people and planet.

In 2020, we installed our living green wall on the exterior of the centre, which has increased green space in the city, improved air quality and provided a habitat for over 15 species of plant – and at 65 metres in length, it’s one of the longest walls of its kind in the country!

In 2021, we built on this great work with the installation of our rooftop beehives. These hives have become home to over 40,000 bees which now pollinate flowers, plants and trees within a three-mile radius of the centre. The success of these exciting projects even led to us being shortlisted for a national award for green business initiatives.

These are just some of the ways we’ve been ensuring we have a positive impact on the world around us, working in collaboration with organisations across the Liverpool City Region.

But we don’t want to stop there. We’ll be continuing to develop exciting, new ways of becoming a more sustainable centre, to benefit our customers and the wider communities we serve.

We’ve been around for over 50 years and now we’re looking ahead to the future, ensuring it’s a greener, cleaner and brighter future for our shoppers.

In the bag: retailers scoop mystery shopper awards

08/11/21

We’re thrilled that retailers based in St Johns have been awarded eight coveted awards at the Liverpool BID Mystery Shopper Awards!

The ceremony, which took place on Wednesday night, saw our retailers go up against over 400 businesses from across Merseyside, with the St Johns retailers winning more awards than any comparable shopping centre in the city.

Beaverbrooks the Jewellers walked away with the Best National Retailer award, while Frocks, Stush, F. Hinds, Dunkin’ , The Fragrance Shop, Boom: Battle Bar and Eurochange were all distinguished with 100% scores.

Neil Ashcroft, Centre Manager at St Johns Liverpool, said: “I’m absolutely delighted with the Centre’s great success at this year’s Mystery Shopper Awards.

“Our retailers, both big and small, have continued to work hard, despite the obstacles the Covid-19 pandemic presented and the ongoing issues surrounding the Connectivity Scheme.

“The receipt of these awards is testament to the high-quality service St Johns and its tenants provide to shoppers, and we look forward to continuing to serve our community in the best way possible.”

Bill Addy, CEO at Liverpool BID Company, added: “It’s important we recognise what a huge achievement this is for our city centre businesses, and particularly for St Johns.

“The Centre has shown incredible strength and determination in the face of a challenging year. A warm welcome is always guaranteed at St Johns and these results prove it.

“Customer service is crucial for the wider city centre in shaping people’s experiences and enjoyment. Liverpool has demonstrated resilience this year and these results show businesses are committed to maintaining their high standards of customer service.”

Sarah McVicar, Senior Asset Manager at RivingtonHark, added: “The success of the Centre’s retailers in the Mystery Shopper Awards is great news for the St Johns community.

“These coveted awards demonstrate St Johns’ ongoing commitment to providing a high-quality service to shoppers, placing the Centre in a strong position for 2022 and beyond.”

St Johns’ car park and the adjoining Holiday Inn hotel were also recognised for their excellent levels of customer service, and the Liverpool BID company noted that St Johns is ahead of the rest of the city for the level of service it provides.

St Johns and the car park remain open for the convenience of our community. To explore our retailers, head to https://stjohns-shopping.co.uk/stores/

Hey, Liverpool!

07/07/21

St Johns Liverpool are proud to be launching a new campaign centred around our community of customers, those who have shopped with us for many years and whose loyalty we value.

We know that the past 18 months have been a challenging time for many people and we want to recognise that through our initiatives, giving back to the community and acknowledging the various ways that they enrich and enhance our centre.

Over the last year, we’ve been developing a series of environmental initiatives, like our living green wall and rooftop beehives, with the goal of making the immediate area a greener, cleaner place for staff and customers alike. We’re thrilled that these unique and novel initiatives have had a direct impact on the local environment, but also on the wellbeing of shoppers and local residents too.

Alongside these environmental projects, we want to make sure we are reaching out to support our wider community of shoppers in whichever way we can. So, over the coming months, we’ll be organising competitions with exciting prizes up for grabs, working with schools and community organisations, rewarding staff who’ve gone above and beyond, and creating in-centre experiences for families and friends.

We want these acts of kindness to have a positive impact on our community of people, and we look forward to inviting you to make new memories with St Johns Liverpool.

St Johns installs rooftop beehives

18/05/21

As part of our growing efforts to become a more environmentally conscious organisation, and to promote positive mental wellbeing among our employees, we’ve installed two beehives on the rooftop of our site!

It might come as a surprise, but bees are incredibly important to our ecosystem, and they play a critical role in preserving ecological balance. Without bees pollinating plants, crops and flowers, we wouldn’t be able to produce much of the food that sustains us and our city wouldn’t be as green as it is.

The hope is that by keeping bees on our rooftop, we can do our part in contributing to the environmental generation of the local area. Between the two hives, there’ll be 40,000 bees – and this number will keep growing as the hives attract new bees!

But this isn’t the time we’ve developed an initiative to become a more environmentally friendly centre. Last June, we installed a “living green wall” on the exterior of the centre, an installation with over 14,000 evergreen plants to encourage bees to pollinate. At 65 metres, it’s one of the longest of its kind in the UK and it also contributes to making our city a greener place.

This new initiative won’t just have an environmental impact, though. Beekeeping has been shown to reduce stress, anxiety and depression, so we hope that we can have a positive effect on the mental wellbeing of our incredible team, as well as benefiting the local environment.

If you want to learn more about our rooftop hives and other exciting initiatives, follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to keep up to date!

St Johns & COVID-19: Frequently Asked Questions

05/06/20

Since 1969 St Johns has been here for you and here for Liverpool. Like other shopping centres across the UK we have been supporting communities, ensuring essential stores remain open and accessible to all throughout the duration of the COVID-19 pandemic.

We ask that when you do start visiting the Centre again, that you are patient, responsible and respectful to everyone in the Centre. And, please do give particular priority to the elderly and vulnerable in our community.

As a community shopping centre, St Johns cares about Liverpool and we want to continue enhancing the lives of local people in every way we can, and particularly during the current time, ensuring that you, your family and your friends can shop safe.

What are St Johns’ opening times?

Regular St Johns opening times will resume on Monday 15th June as follows:

Monday – Wednesday, 9am – 6pm.

Thursday, 9am – 7pm.

Friday – Saturday, 9am – 6pm.

Sunday, 11am – 5pm.

Please note that these operating hours refer to the shopping centre. The opening hours of individual stores may vary; please contact stores directly to confirm their opening hours.

What measures has St Johns taken to minimise COVID-19?

As a community shopping centre in the heart of Liverpool, we recognise that the health and safety of our customers, colleagues and retailers must be our highest priority.

As such, we will be ensuring that the Centre is re-opening in a controlled and compliant manner that adheres to government guidelines.

To ensure the Centre is ready to be re-opened to the public we have undertaken a series of measures:

The entire centre has been subject to a chemical deep clean of all malls, ceilings, floors, entrances and back of house. The chemical used in the clean disinfects against COVID-19 on contact.

We have implemented, and will continue with, an intensive cleaning schedule. Throughout the day, every day, all touchpoints in the Centre (e.g. door handles, tables, surfaces) will be cleaned with a chemical spray which disinfects against COVID-19 on contact.

Twenty new hand sanitiser stations have been installed throughout the Centre. These are free for you to use and will be cleaned and refilled regularly throughout the day, every day.

To make sure the Centre stays as clean as possible we have implemented photographic cleaning audits. We will be checking on a regular, scheduled basis that all touchpoints have been thoroughly and appropriately cleaned to keep you, your family, friends safe.

How are you supporting retailers to prevent COVID-19?

St Johns is home to a wide variety of different stores, but they ALL have a responsibility to ensure they are implementing appropriate social distancing and cleansing measures to protect the public, their staff and centre workers.

We are working collaboratively with all of our stores to make sure they are safe to open.

Before opening to the public, all stores within St Johns will have completed the following actions:

Completed a COVID-19 Risk Assessment which includes setting out regular in-store cleaning schedules.

Setting out appropriate social distancing measures within their stores such as the installation of floor markings and fixtures.

We will also be encouraging all stores to consider the installation of perspex screens at till areas, to provide staff with PPE (Personal Protective Equipment), and to request that customers use contactless payment options where possible.

All stores are also under strict instruction to close immediately and inform centre management if any member of staff begins to show symptoms of COVID019.

What social distancing measures will be in place in St Johns?

We want your visit to St Johns to be as safe and pleasant as possible. You will see social distancing signage throughout the Centre. This includes floor markings which will tell you where it is safe to walk, safe to stop, and safe to queue.

You may find that sometimes you have to wait outside the Centre before you can come in. This is because we can only let a certain number of people into the Centre at any one time. This is so that social distancing can be safely observed. We ask for your patience when this happens.

When you are walking around the Centre you may occasionally hear public announcements over the Centre tannoy system. These are friendly reminders to make sure that everyone is practising social distancing.

Will St Johns be monitoring the number of people in the Centre at any one time?

Yes. We will be actively monitoring the number of people in the Centre so that social distancing can be maintained. We have calculated the total number of people that can be in the Centre at any one time, allowing for 2 metres of personal space. Our footfall cameras will enable us to monitor this number and if necessary, we will close entrances until the number of people in the Centre has decreased.

This may mean that you occasionally have to wait outside the Centre. We ask for your patience when this happens. We don’t want to put the health of our customers, retailers or staff at risk. As soon as the number of people in the Centre decreases, you will be allowed to enter.

Will St Johns have a one-way system?

No. We haven’t put a one-way system in place as we want to make sure your shopping trip is as simple as possible. There are many social distancing reminders around the Centre as well as floor markings highlighting where you can queue for your favourite stores. We want you to shop safe and enjoy your visit to the Centre.

Is the car park open?

Yes. The car is open.

Are St Johns’ toilets open?

Yes. The toilets are now open.

What measures are you taking to protect elderly and vulnerable shoppers?

St Johns is open for all. But we want to make sure that elderly and vulnerable shoppers are able to enjoy a safe and enjoyable shopping experience. We have installed signage that asks shoppers to take care and respect elderly and vulnerable shoppers. We will also have regular public announcements over our tannoy system reminding shoppers to take care and respect elderly and vulnerable shoppers.

We’ve taken other measures to ensure that St Johns is as inclusive as possible. We have installed free hand sanitisers at wheelchair-user friendly height. We’ve also updated our digital assistant Able AI with all of the latest accessibility information to ensure that vulnerable shoppers can access the information they need to have a safe, comfortable and enjoyable shopping experience.

St Johns – a stand out performer once again

20/01/20

Great news! New figures released show that we were one of the UK’s stand-out performers in 2019, despite a dramatic fall in shopper numbers nationally for traditional shopping centres.

Across the UK, we have seen decreasing footfall dips due to consumers opting for the convenience of online shopping or retail parks. However, 2019 was our most successful year yet as we welcomed 13 million shoppers through our doors, generating an additional £10m in sales while we celebrated our 50th birthday.

While multiple UK high streets and shopping centres are struggling and facing uncertain futures, we have bucked national trends thanks to our prime city-centre location, innovative marketing strategy and great shopping experience.

Last year was our best ever year, and we aim to continue to strive and stand out from other shopping centres and retail destinations from our outstanding attention-to-detail. We’re confident that we can make 2020 an even more successful year as we continue to develop our retail environment which combines the best independent stores from across Liverpool and national retail brands.

We’d like to thank our senior management team for all their continued dedication, and our new (and returning) customers who make us a great success!

Welcome, The Whitechapel Centre!

03/01/20

We would like to welcome The Whitechapel Centre as our new charity partner.

The Whitechapel Centre is one of the leading homelessness and housing charities in Liverpool. Their mission is to prevent and resolve homelessness, social exclusion and housing poverty by providing practical, realistic, tailored support so that each person can find a route out of homelessness, maintain a home and achieve their individual potential. Their services include Street Outreach, supported accommodation for both single people and families, harm reduction, learning and enablement activities, housing and welfare advice, peer mentoring, and a private rented bond scheme. All of their projects reflect the diverse routes into and through homelessness.

The partnership will last six months, running for the beginning of January, until the end of June. The Whitechapel Centre will have access to the centre, allowing them to hold events, raise awareness and fundraise throughout the period.

Neil Ashcroft, Centre Manager explains “We’re happy to announce The Whitechapel Centre as our chosen charity for the next six months. As a community shopping centre, it is important that we reach out to everyone that we can, we’re thrilled to fundraise and assist such a valuable charity.”

Please keep up-to-date with the latest events on our social media pages!

Christmas Quiet Hour at The Entertainer

10/12/19

The Entertainer is introducing a Christmas quiet hour to create a safe environment for autistic people and to enable a calmer shopping experience in-store.

Every morning for the first hour, the store will be turning off the music, loud demos and (where possible) dimming the lights.

What a brilliant idea!👏
